Out at a petting park one night in Dowingtown watching the stars 17-year old Steve Andrews (Steve McQueen) is wooing his girlfriend Jane Martin (Aneta Corsaut) when they see a large meteor appearing to fall to Earth nearby so they go in search of it. Before they reach the meteor an Old Man (Olin Howard) finds it and sees that there is a gooey material oozing from the where the meteor has landed. The gooey material attaches itself to the old mans hand and begins crawling and expanding up his arm. Steve and Jane discover the man and take him to Dr. Hallen in town who cannot figure out what the thing is and asks Steve and Jane fore more information. Steve and Jane drive back out to the old mans house for more evidence taking with them some of the local bad boys led by Tony Gressette (Robert Fields). When Steve and Jane return to town, they discover that the Blob has consumed the doctor and try to convince the local police led by Sergeant Jim Bert (John Benson) of this horror but when they investigate they cant find anything. In the meantime Steve and Janes parents demand they go home for the night, but the two teenagers sneak out and investigate further and discover that the Blob has grown to enormous proportions. They manage to alert the Police and during the midst of stampeding teenagers and towns folk discover the secret to stopping the Blob.
